What you’ve told us

  • Dalston Eastern Curve Garden is successful and well-loved by a large section of the community and is the only green space in the town centre.
  • Gillett Square is well used by all the community, uses varying at different times of the day and week.
  • Dalston Square is used by young people and has been successful during events like the the Dalston Children’s festival.
  • There is a severe lack of green space across Dalston, which is detrimental to people and biodiversity. The Dalston ward has 20 times less green space per head than the De Beauvoir ward, and four times less than Shacklewell, which are both already well below the advised amount.
  • Antisocial behaviour in Gillett Square deters many people in the community and is detrimental to the businesses on the square.
  • Dalston Square is underused and not fulfilling its full potential. It is a wind tunnel which is affecting users as well as businesses on the square.

What the Local Plan 2033 says

  • Protect existing open spaces, including the Dalston Eastern Curve Garden, and maximise opportunities to create new public space and green links between them.
  • New development should enhance the network of green infrastructure and seek to improve access to open space.
  • Biodiversity is to be protected and enhanced, maximising opportunities to create new or make improvements to existing natural environments.
  • Protect and support the development of new play facilities that are inclusive to all, with larger developments required to provide 10sqm play space per child.
