Good intentions, but new venues need to blend in with and complement existing ones so the areas they are in are used by generally like-minded people.

The cluster of attractions in Ashwin Street is a great assest to Dalston, but all have grown organically and have unique characters of their own. The puspose-built building used by the Vortex in Gillet Square, by contrast, fails (for me) in location and as it is a rather awkward space which lacks character. So, private creative input is needed for the future development of the local arts scene and should be encouraged - developer-led developments are great in theory but won't always work. Improved safety is essential if the night time economy is to flourish.

Objective 51, Comments from David Fried of Studio Upstairs:- Of course we dont want our rent to go up and from the perspective of studio upstairs we would like some acknowledgement from Hackney council as a local organisation in arts and mental health for the work that we have been doing for years here in the area. Possibly in terms of financial support in term of funded referrals that Hackney social services could make to our organisation as we also cater for local people

Objective 59 I am not sure about designing out crime. Some of the people who populate Gillett square have substantial alcohol and drug related addiction problems with related antisocial and criminal behaviour The members of Studio Upstairs have often been verbally abused and made to feel uncomfortably specific individuals who need to be identified and who's access to the area needs to be restricted. Studio members have not been physically assaulted but they have been made to feel uncomfortable, when they have to enter or exit the Dalston culture house. There is also a problem with the same people drinking alcohol and subsequently relieving themselves in various locations around the square which is unhygienic and unpleasant because it smells bad. The area needs to be policed more heavily in order to discourage the above mentioned behaviour.

Objective 59: Deliver a series of public realm improvements in areas of identified crime and antisocial behaviour, such as Gillett Square and Ridley Road.

The people mentioned in above objectives are those considered valuable to the council, ie. those who directly contribute to the economy. There's no emphasis on helping the vulnerable or in any way improving Hackney's approach to supporting communities. Currently it's all very money focused.

Commenting on the above as a whole; Hackney should be protecting and supporting existing communities - prioritising the vulnerable communities and families who are being priced out and having their cultures eradicated. Protect community spaces such as Gillett Square and Ridley Road - don't sell the off or lease space out to corporate chains and private developers. Have a huge training drive for the law enforcement teams - specifically about racism - the windrush generation, systemic racism, generational trauma and the like. Things would drastically imrpove if the police were better informed and able to understand the context in which they're working. We all need training in these things - but the police and law enforcement are in a position to either be a force for good, or do real long-term damage.

Supporting the existing communities at Gillett Square and Ridley Road Market would go a long way to promoting several of the above objectives; 51, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57. Currently there is a combative and excluding approach from the council - which is present in so many ways; from the neglect of these areas, lack of maintenance, lack of interest in the continual requests from local stakeholders for public toilets - not to mention the routinely combative, disrespectful and disinterested approach to policing and community safeguarding. A huge shake up is needed.

Promote the arts that are already there! Give more funding to existing venues. More action on reducing crime and have more police on the streets.

60. You have let me down for 3 years with the ASB issues I have with my neighbours who are drug users and this affects me living in Hackney. You need to fix this issue as you do nothing.

Dalston is full of foreigners which brings more crime to the area. There is human faeces on the residential roads, thieves on bikes, drug dealers and smokers in the public (anyone with a family hates the area). There is plenty to do in Dalston but the anti-social behaviour keeps me spending my money elsewhere. So much crime I hate it.
